Classical tarot meaning: the Fool's step
This card belongs to the oldest place in the deck — the unnumbered Fool, walking with a small bundle and a raised face, one foot already over the edge. It is not the card of the naive; it is the card of the unproven. Everything the deck goes on to teach begins with this step.
Traditionally it reads as new beginnings, spontaneity, and trust: the exact moment before experience arrives to make you careful.
The card in Madam Moira's deck
In Madam Moira's deck this face is called The Leap. The painting shows the moment of departure rather than the arrival: a figure at the lip of the dark, weight already forward, the gold ahead too far away to be counted on. There is no net in the picture, and no fall either. Only the commitment.
It arrives most often for people who have already decided and are waiting to be told it is safe.
Upright: what it asks of you
Upright, The Leap says the information you are still waiting for does not exist. Some things are only learned by beginning them — the conversation, the move, the work, the honesty. The card does not promise the landing. It promises that standing still is also a choice, and a heavier one.
It favours first attempts, unpolished starts, and the willingness to be a beginner in public.
Reversed: where the step goes wrong
Turned inward, the leap is either endlessly rehearsed or taken for the wrong reason. There is the person who has been at the edge so long that the edge has become their address. And there is the person who jumps to get away from something rather than towards something, and lands in the same shape of life with a different view.
Ask which one is in the room. Both are answered by naming what you are actually walking towards.
The Leap in love, work, and the everyday
In love, it marks the sentence not yet said out loud — the one that changes the terms. In work, it is the unproven direction, the first client, the thing you are not qualified for yet by any measure except willingness.
Day to day, it asks for one small unhedged act: something begun today without securing the outcome first.
What this card asks
- ✦“What have you already decided but not begun?”
- ✦“What proof are you waiting for that could never arrive in time?”
- ✦“Are you leaping towards something, or away?”
